Highlands and Islands, Day 2 - Mull and Iona

Even though I'm back in the States, I thought I'd finish blogging about my time in Scotland, so this post is about the 2nd day of my trip to the West Coast and islands.

On day 2 of our travels, we got up bright and early to catch the 7 a.m. ferry to the Isle of Mull. This gave us some flexibility in our timing, allowing us to spend some extra time touring Mull before traveling over to the tiny island of Iona. On Mull, we saw beautiful scenery - rolling green hills, the ruins of Duart Castle, and the bright colors of the waterfront village of Tobermory.

We caught a ferry across the water to Iona, which is supposedly the birthplace of Christianity in Europe. In 563, St. Columba sailed to Iona from Ireland and established a monastery there. We visited the ancient abbey and nunnery on this site, and saw the numerous stone crosses on the island. It was quite impressive.

We spent the night in a hostel on Iona, so Amie and I decided to take a walk down to the beach that evening. We were treated with a lovely sunset. The colors weren't very vivid, but the sight of the sunbeams breaking through the clouds was amazing.

Seriously...you should consider ditching seminary and getting a job as a professional photographer.
